Nova Health Provider Profile

“If I could give all my patients one piece of advice it would be work only to live, be kind, and trust the universe.”

Matthew A. Shaw, MD

Family Medicine

As a primary care physician, Dr. Shaw’s goal is to help his patients to live a holistically healthy life by identifying potential risk factors, developing treatment plans for known issues, and helping to ease the symptoms associated with chronic conditions. “My relationship with my patients, and helping them achieve their ideal quality of life, is what I value the most in my career.”

With knowledge and experience in assessing and treating the entire continuum of patient care, Dr. Shaw’s background offers him particular insights and expertise in the areas of dermatologic procedures and adult and sports medicine. As a lifelong athlete, Dr. Shaw understands the challenges that recreational and competitive athletes face and works to help them understand how to train their bodies to perform without risking injury. “I have competed and coached in the CrossFit Open Games, participated in my City rep club’s Athletics Hockey Team for 12 years, and competed in provincial golf tournaments. I understand the drive to compete at a high level, and the realities of how our bodies change as we age, and I want to help my patients to achieve their goals safely.”

Dr. Shaw, who was born and raised in Canada, served as a Naval Officer Cadet in the Canadian Armed Forces while earning his undergraduate degree in Medical Sciences from the University of Western Ontario. “At a young age, I was fascinated with learning the cellular functioning of the body and translating that to people’s health. I think my path in life was always destined for patient care and healing.”

When not working, Dr. Shaw enjoys playing hockey with friends, finding balance and relaxation in a heated Moksha yoga class, and giving back to the community by volunteering as a hockey and soccer coach, though he admits, “I do have a weakness for food trucks and love to just relax and make an indent on my couch.”
