Nova Health Provider Profile
Katie Schoonover, FNP
For Katie Schoonover, her work in the medical field allows her to unite two of her favorite things. “I love people, and I love science. I find the work I do very meaningful and want my boys to know I’m doing good work when not with them. It has been the perfect match.” She earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing in 2004 from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, completed family nurse practitioner coursework at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, and earned her certification as a family nurse practitioner from Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, OR in 2010.
While completing her clinical education, Katie conducted rotations in a variety of units, including maternal and fetal medicine, urgent care, and family practice. These varied experiences serve her well today as she treats patients with a variety of wellness, chronic, and sudden illness and injury needs.
Katie began her career as a registered nurse working in the post-operative cardiovascular unit at Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids Michigan and then at Peace Health in Springfield, Oregon. “I held those positions for a total of six years. During that time I saw many patients with severe cardiac and vascular conditions that impacted or ended their lives. I returned to school to earn a master’s degree as a family nurse practitioner in hopes of providing primary care and working with patients to prevent such morbidity and mortality.”
To achieve her goals, Katie earned a Master of Science Degree in Nursing from Oregon Health and Science University. Today Katie brings her kindness, optimism, and collaborative approach to care to her Nova Health patients. “I love the variety of family practice—coaching healthy people on staying healthy, guiding patients through new diagnoses, and developing plans to manage chronic conditions.”
Katie lives in Eugene with her husband and two young sons. When not at work, she loves exploring the outdoors with her family. “I love skiing, hiking, biking, camping, and tackling endless home improvement projects.”
