Nova Health Provider Profile

“I love taking care of families. I believe in taking care of the whole person. Emotional health is as important as physical health. I am passionate about taking care of my patients like I would want my family to be treated.”
Jamera Thompson was inspired to pursue a career in medicine after being cared for by a compassionate healthcare team at a young age. “As a child, I developed ITP (Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura) and spent time in Children’s Hospital in Seattle. I met women physicians for the first time, and it was so impactful. That’s when I knew I wanted to work in medicine.”
Jamera followed her dream and has dedicated the entirety of her over 25-year career as a physician assistant (PA) in the Pacific Northwest. As a PA, her responsibilities include diagnosing and treating patients, prescribing medications, ordering diagnostic tests, conducting in-office procedures, well-child checks, well-adult exams, and treating such conditions as diabetes, hypertension, and other illnesses. Her particular areas of expertise include family medicine and women’s health.
Jamera completed the University of Washington MEXEX Northwest Physician Assistant Program in Seattle in 1995 and immediately began caring for patients at Shoreline Family Center (today Northwest Hospital).
Over the next six years, she offered her services to Alternative Missions, where she worked as the Medical Director of St. Helene Medical Clinic. Operated by Alternative Missions, the clinic was located in St. Helene, Roatan, Honduras. During that time, she diagnosed and treated patients on the island of approximately 900 residents as its sole medical provider. “I loved working in an underserved population.” During her time at St. Helene, Jamera prescribed and dispensed medications, coordinated and implemented patient care plans, oversaw full-time and volunteer medical staff, coordinated fundraisers, and networked with existing governmental health organizations.
Before joining Nova Health, Jamera worked as a physician assistant-OB/GYN at the Kadlec Clinic – Associated Physicians for Women in Richland, Washington. Her duties included diagnosing and treating gynecological and obstetrical patients, prescribing medications, conducting in-office procedures, and surgical first assisting.
The one piece of advice Jamera would like to give her patients is to ensure they are balancing work and pleasure. “It is so important to achieve a work–life balance. Long–term stress will affect your health. Balance in life is as important as taking medications.”
Jamera has traveled to multiple countries to help build schools and medical clinics. “I adopted my oldest child from Guatemala and my youngest from foster care.” Despite her global travels, Jamera remains a local at heart. “I graduated high school form Richland High in 1983 and am a home grown kid from the Tri Cities.” When not caring for her patients, Jamera spends most of her time with her family and her boxer DaisyMae. She enjoys camping, reading, crafting, and gardening.
