Nova Health Provider Profile

Amy Hinshaw

“What I love most about practicing medicine is connecting with my patients and partnering to help them lead healthier lives.”

Amy Hinshaw, FNP

Urgent Care Provider

Amy Hinshaw always had an interest in medicine, but it was a personal experience that inspired her to pursue a life-saving career. “I donated a kidney to my brother in 2007. That process inspired me to go back to school.” Today, as a family nurse practitioner, Amy is committed to providing compassionate, high-quality patient care throughout her patients’ lifetimes. She is available for her patients, with a kind smile and sympathetic ear to provide sick and well exams, identify diagnoses, provide treatment recommendations, promote long-term health and wellbeing, and prevent disease. “I wish I could tell all my patients, ‘you are worth it, and someone cares!’ No matter what people are going through, sometimes the hardest part is learning to take the time to focus on your health and wellbeing.”

Amy is knowledgeable and experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of such chronic and complex conditions as diabetes, hypertension, asthma and COPD, chronic pain, anxiety and depression, liver and kidney disease, hepatitis C, congenital defects, and autoimmune diseases. “To me, practicing medicine is about caring for an entire person, not just their injury or disease. Patients sometimes feel lost in the shuffle of the medical world, and I try very hard to make sure patients understand that they matter to me, not just their physical health but mentally, emotionally, and spiritually also.”

Amy has over ten years of surgery and trauma critical care experience and more than three years of primary care experience with a focus on complex chronic disease management. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from the Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes Jewish College in St. Louis, MO, in 2010 and a Master of Science Degree in Nursing from Maryville University in St. Louis, Missouri. While earning her master’s degree, Amy applied her knowledge and experience to help inspire the next generation of healthcare leaders by working as an adjunct clinical faculty member at the Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes Jewish College for two years. During this time, she supervised inpatient clinical students, mentoring them on providing safe, quality care and teaching them to administer medications, develop their critical thinking skills, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team for optimal outcomes.

Amy then moved to Western Oregon, and while working at a hospital and health center in Western Oregon, she treated underserved populations and highly complex cases to achieve optimal outcomes. “There is nothing better than knowing that what you do every day makes a difference in someone’s life.”

Leveraging her commitment to quality and her natural leadership skills, while working in a Community Health Center in North Bend, she acted as a co-chair of the facility’s Quality Improvement Committee. She also served on the Interdisciplinary Quality Improvement Committee organized by Advanced Health. She is pleased to be a member of the Nova Health Team and the Northwestern Oregon community. “I am very excited to be a part of bringing more healthcare access, especially for urgent concerns, to this area.”

When she’s not caring for her patients, Amy is caring for her pets, which she affectionately refers to as her “petting zoo.” She has two hedgehogs, one giant rabbit, two dogs, and three cats. She also enjoys spending time with her family, reading, going to the beach, hiking, and kayaking.
